Four towering mountain ranges intersect Costa Rica’s rugged and picturesque interior, including hundreds of ancient volcanoes. Six are currently active, and over 60 lay dormant – for the time being.
The rich volcanic soil and temperate climate have nurtured the growth of vast rain and cloud forests on the mountain’s flanks, home to countless bird, reptile, and animal species.
From the iconic Arenal, known for its symmetrical perfection, to the breathtaking Poás with its sapphire-colored crater lake, these fiery giants are a testament to the country's geological splendor. Bubbling hot thermal rivers and springs emerge from below ground, much to visitors’ delight and good health.
